Investigation Summary

Crash Description

On August 19, 2025 at 12:30 pm a crash involving a passenger car and a pedestrian on an e-scooter occurred on Ann Arbor Saline Rd near Oakbrook Dr. At the time of the crash, it was daylight with clear skies, and dry roads.

This area of road is asphalt, with Ann Arbor Saline Rd being straight with a slight downhill grade for southbound traffic, oriented north-south. The crash occurred at a mid-block crosswalk, at this area there are two (2) lanes of travel for each direction. The crosswalk is mid-block but is marked with pavement markings, signs and RRFB warning signals. There is also a pedestrian island in the middle of the crosswalk.

The vehicle, a 2023 Toyota Venza, was being driven by a 79-year-old female, the pedestrian was a 52-year-old male operating an e-scooter. The car was travelling southbound in the left lane. The pedestrian was crossing in the mid-block crosswalk from west to east on his e-scooter. The pedestrian activated the RRFB warning signals as he entered the crosswalk. A southbound car in the right lane stated they were just able to stop to yield to the pedestrian, the involved vehicle did not stop, and struck the pedestrian as he crossed into the left lane.

The impact causes significant injuries to the pedestrian. Investigations did not find excessive speed, however the stopped vehicle in the right lane may have caused a visibility obstruction for the involved car.
