Investigation Summary
Crash Description
On May 31, 2026 at 4:42 pm a crash involving a single vehicle occurred on S. State. St near I-94 and State Cir. At the time of the crash it was daylight, with clear skies and dry roadways. The roadway where this occurred is concrete and asphalt with a paved median island for a majority of the area. At the time of the crash all traffic signals in the area were functioning properly.
The vehicle had exited I-94 westbound and turned left to travel southbound on S State St. As the vehicle began to merge into southbound traffic the driver, a 58-year-old male suffered a medical episode and lost control of the vehicle. As a result of the medical event, the driver's body fell limp and lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle crossed over the concrete median island and continued southbound in the northbound lanes. The passenger of the vehicle saw oncoming traffic and pulled the steering wheel to avoid a head on collision. The vehicle then crossed back over the median island striking two traffic signal utility boxes and crossing back into the southbound lanes. The vehicle then left the roadway on the westbound striking a light pole and coming to rest.
The driver suffered a cardiac arrest, unknown pre or post-crash, and suffered additional significant injuries. The passenger, also suffered significant injuries. As of June 9, 2026, both are in stable condition.
